A group of talented young chess enthusiasts from Loeriesfontein High School recently competed in a chess tournament in Williston, Northern Cape, bringing home two medals. Comprising six learners, the team represented their school with great determination as part of the Rise and Excel Programme.

The team, consisting of Christopher Okhuis, Deogan Swarts, Shonrey-Lee Basson, and Fabian Muller, celebrated remarkable successes, highlighted by Dewido Beukes winning a silver medal and Eathon Strauss taking home a bronze.

“I am excited and proud of our team’s outstanding performance in the chess competition. Watching our learners grow and develop their critical thinking skills, strategic planning, and sportsmanship has been an incredible journey. This achievement is not only a testament to their individual talents but also a reflection of the supportive and collaborative spirit of our entire school community. I look forward to seeing their continued growth and success in the future,” expressed Zitrom Steenkamp, chess team’s coach.

With transportation funded by Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms, the team travelled to Williston where their journey began with a friendly match, culminating in a formal competition on 24 August 2024, where they faced off against skilled young players from across the region.

“Chess is more than just a game for these learners, it’s a gateway to cognitive development, improved academic performance, and the honing of critical life skills. Through the discipline of chess, these learners are building confidence, enhancing their focus, and developing strategic thinking abilities that will benefit them far beyond the chessboard,” concluded Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesftontein and Khobab Wind Farms.
